WARSAW — Warsaw Community High School Theater Department will perform “Mama Mia!” this week.
The show has two casts that will each perform an evening show and a matinee.
Melany Morris, theater teacher, says the two casts allow for more opportunities for students, as well as understudies, and a fuller house for the four shows. The casts are named the Honey Cast and Money Cast, referring to ABBA lyrics.
In the double casting, one night a student is an ensemble character, and the other night the student is a lead, said Shannon Smith, who is playing Donna in the Money Cast.
“‘Mama Mia!’ is about a mother and a daughter who live on a Greek island and the mother’s name is Donna. She’s running a hotel. The daughter, Sophie, is getting married, so they’re getting ready for the wedding. Sophie doesn’t know who her father is, but she finds her mother’s diary and finds three mysterious men who her mother wrote about when she got pregnant,” said Smith.
Gianna Stouder, who plays Sophie in the Money Cast, said the three mystery men then get invited to the wedding.
The students talked about the themes they took away from the musical.
“A theme I love is that love overcomes so much, no matter what. A quote I always think about is, ‘Without love, we are birds with broken wings.’ I feel like that applies to ‘Mama Mia!’ Before the dads come back, Donna is kind of a mess, a little broken. But she reconnects with Sam, and there’s this love that grows. And not just romantically but between everyone,” said Chloe Kim, who plays Sophie in the Honey Cast.
“You don’t need to find comfort in where you are or who you’re with. You need to find comfort in who you are as a person. The people around you won’t always be exactly what you need, but you need to trust yourself,” said Comet Williamson, who plays Rosie in the Honey Cast.
The students have been rehearsing since December and had their tech rehearsals this past week, where they added costumes, set pieces and lights.
Smith said since there’s two casts with different leads, students have to learn different parts for each show. It has helped her grow as an actor and manage her time.
Students also talked about what they found difficult during final rehearsals.
Gavin Ott, who plays Harry in the Money Cast, said the hardest part so far is putting everything together since they’ve been learning everything in chunks.
Anna Silveus, who plays Donna in the Honey Cast, said one of the hardest things for her is making sure to connect all the things she’s memorizing for her character.
The Honey Cast will perform at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday. The Money Cast will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
The production is two hours long plus a 15-minute intermission.
Tickets can be purchased online here for $15 for adults and $10 for students/seniors, or they can be purchased at the door for an additional $3 per ticket.
