CROMWELL — A new series of meetings hosted by LITE Recovery aims to help families dealing with loved ones struggling with substance or alcohol abuse.

Often, families that attempt an intervention in an attempt to coax a loved one into finding help, struggle to do so because those in need are resistant and the efforts can require multiple attempts.

The meetings will provide insights on how to talk with somebody who needs treatment.

LITE Recovery will host the meetings, known as CRAFT (Community Reenforcement Family Training), for 12 weeks on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. in Cromwell, at 9726 E King Arthurs Trail, at the Bowen Health co-op building, Cotton said.

Tammy Cotton, executive director of LITE Recovery, of Milford, says discussions will focus on best practices and non-confrontational techniques.

Cotton says a lot of it has to do with how to interact.

“We’re not here to convince someone. We’re here to walk alongside them,” Cotton said.

Participants are encouraged to attend all of the free classes or just one. Gift cards will be offered as incentives for those who attend all.

Cotton, whose family attempted interventions years ago, said the training can help families prepare.

“I would have loved to have had something like this, to be honest,” she said.

Cotton said grant money was used to train ten people for the program and that they eventually plan to take the program to other communities.
